Deep learning with artificial neural networks is playing an increasingly important role in data-analysis for the physical sciences, as researchers in the geosciences, high-energy physics, and astronomy struggle to take full advantage of the massive amounts of high-dimensional data being collected through new imaging technologies. The University of Hawaii Data Science Institute aims to accelerate scientific progress in these fields through use of deep learning methods. This talk will present recent work mapping extreme sea states using Satellite Aperture Radar (SAR), increasing the sensitivity of high-energy physics experiments, and detecting anomalous astrophysical events in other systems, such as comets transiting distant stars.
Peter Sadowski is an Assistant Professor of Information and Computer Sciences at the University of Hawaii Manoa and Co-Director of the AI Precision Health Institute at the University of Hawaii Cancer Center.
He completed his Ph.D. and Postdoc at University of California Irvine, and his undergraduate studies at Caltech. His research focuses on deep learning and its applications to the natural sciences, particularly those at the intersection of machine learning and physics. Webpage:
