Abstract:

The brief history of audio system development is initially given in this talk. The speaker then introduces the quadraphonics filling the gap between the stereo and surround sound. The side effect of contemporary surround sound is also investigated. The multi-channel audio technologies envelop the listeners by using loudspeakers coming from the front, rear, sides and above. However, the spectral reconstruction errors caused by truncation, comb filtering, and low-pass filtering may occur. The possible solutions are suggested. The idea of experiencing multi-channel surround sound in our house indeed thrills most of us until we discover how expensive and complicated it is to set up and adjust the equipment. Therefore, the binaural spatial sound has been developed. Several types of spatial sounds are finally illustrated.

Biography:

Dr. Yao received his B.Sc. degree from National Taipei University of Technology and the M.Sc. degree from National Cheng Kung University, all in electrical engineering. He completed a Ph.D. in electronic, electrical and systems engineering from the University of Birmingham, UK. He worked with Silicon Integrated Systems Corporation as a research and development engineer from 2007 to 2008. From 2009 to 2010, he was at Keelung Customs Office. Since 2016, he has been an assistant professor at National Taipei University, Taiwan. His research has been centred around the field of signal processing, usually for acoustics-related applications. He was an outstanding reviewer of Computers & Electrical Engineering in 2015 and 2017. At present, he is a member of the IEEE and the AES.
