Abstract:

Acquiring proper vantage points, especially at suitable locations, is critical to the success of Internet measurement studies. Historically, the high cost of establishing and maintaining vantage points has led researchers to share to obtain desirable network access. However, this sharing process faces challenges, such as vantage point architecture incompatibility, the need for granular and flexible sharing mechanisms to accommodate varying levels of trust, and the lack of incentives for vantage point owners to support new measurements. In this talk, I will present the PacketLab Internet measurement framework, which addresses these challenges by providing a universal vantage point interface and a fine-grained experiment privilege provisioning mechanism involving certificate signing and program-based monitors. Our empirical evaluation demonstrates that PacketLab can accommodate approximately 71.1% of recent Internet measurement studies requiring location-sensitive data, highlighting its potential as the next-generation framework for vantage point sharing.

Biography:

Tzu-Bin Yan is a PhD candidate in Computer Science at the University of Illinois Urbana-Champaign. His research interests lie broadly in the Internet measurement field, with his PhD work centered around facilitating Internet measurement vantage point sharing through his PhD research project PacketLab. Recently, he has also engaged in measurement studies related to online document-sharing websites, focusing on copyright and student academic integrity violation issues. He holds a B.S. in Computer Science and Information Engineering from National Taiwan University before attending UIUC.
