Abstract:
24 years ago, when I was graduating from NTU CSIE. I'm an average student without knowing what is next in my life. I have very little understanding of what I can do and about the software industry. Fast forward 24 years, I went through the top Ph.D. program, a mega-company, a mid-size company, and a unicorn startup in the US. I finally came back to a Taiwan AI company a couple of months ago and really understand what I can do and what I want to do. I truly want to take this opportunity to share my learnings, my views, and my thoughts with the NTU CSIE community.

Bio:
Dr. Robert Chen is VP of Engineering, CrossX at Appier. In his role, he helps chart the company's technology and product direction to build the most comprehensive ads solution, CrossX, which enables businesses to grow their ROI efficiently by leveraging the most advanced AI technology.
Dr. Chen brings over 20 years of experience driving technology strategies, leading large-scale organizations, and building globally scalable platforms and AI technology research. Dr. Chen joins Appier Group most recently from Compass, the real estate technology brokerage firm that is building the first modern enterprise real estate end-to-end platform for real estate staff, agents, and their clients. At Compass, Dr. Chen was responsible for a global engineering organization of over 300 engineers and scientists covering AI/ML, video, digital ads, marketing tech, and brokerage platform services. Dr. Chen helps Compass become the #1 brokerage in the US and successfully IPO in 2021.
Before joining Compass, Dr. Chen served as Senior Director of Zillow Group, and Principal Applied Science Manager at Microsoft. He has built the large scale news recommendation system in Microsoft and the first cloud home valuation system in Zillow.
Dr. Chen received his Ph.D. in computer science from Carnegie Mellon University. He was awarded as one of IBM Emerging leaders in Multimedia during his PhD study. He received his B.S. in computer science from National Taiwan University.
