Join IXILab

Hi there! My name is Yi-Chi Liao (yichiliao.com); I am recruiting members for the Interactive Intelligence Lab (IXILab) at National Taiwan University. If you are interested in understanding how AI can learn from interacting with the world, and how it can better collaborate and learn with humans, we would love to have you at IXILab.

Research at IXILab

Machine learning × human-computer interaction.

Our overarching goal is to understand how we can enable machines to learn complex planning and interact and collaborate with humans more effectively. Our work targets top-tier venues across HCI, machine learning, and computer graphics, including CHI, ICLR, NeurIPS, and SIGGRAPH.

Three directions we are currently pursuing

  1. Interactive Optimization for AI — How can AI systems continually improve through interaction with humans?
  2. Design Intelligence — How can AI understand design intent and turn it into effective actions?
  3. World Models for Interactive Agents — How can intelligent agents understand unfamiliar environments and anticipate the consequences of their actions?

What you will learn

By joining IXILab, you will develop expertise in…

Core knowledge

Reinforcement learning, probabilistic machine learning, computational design, and test-time optimization for generative AI, including LoRAs, steering vectors, prompt optimization, and related techniques.

Practical skills

Physics simulation with Isaac Lab and MuJoCo, biomechanical simulation with MyoSuite, Bayesian optimization using tools such as BoTorch and our own implementations, and practical techniques for steering and adapting modern AI models.

Undergrad & Master’s

For prospective undergraduate and Master’s students.

NTU students only.

What I can offer

  • A healthy research environment. I aim to build a supportive, collaborative, and intellectually open lab environment.
  • Research at the frontier of Human-AI Interaction and machine learning. You will have opportunities to work on emerging research problems rather than only reproducing established methods.
  • Structured research training. I will share research practices I have learned from working across different research environments, covering how to read papers, present research, write scientific papers, formulate research questions, plan projects, and execute research effectively.
  • International collaboration opportunities. I am currently collaborating with researchers at UCL, the University of Cambridge, LMU Munich, ETH Zürich, and Aalto University. I intend to maintain and further expand these international collaborations and create opportunities for students to participate in them.
  • Research resources. The lab will provide substantial GPU resources, and I will financially support students in using AI tools that can meaningfully accelerate their research.
  • Support for Ph.D. applications. I have served multiple times as a reviewer for major European Ph.D. recruitment programs, including ELLIS and the Max Planck Institutes. I am familiar with what competitive Ph.D. applications and recommendation letters are expected to demonstrate. Within my research network and collaborations, I will also actively support students who wish to pursue Ph.D. opportunities internationally.

What I expect

You should have completed calculus and linear algebra.

Coursework in probability or machine learning is a plus. Experience with reinforcement learning, probabilistic machine learning, computer vision, NLP, or cognitive psychology is an even stronger plus.

How to apply

Email yichi@csie.ntu.edu.tw and attach your transcript (both undergraduate and Master’s transcript, if applicable). If you are interested, feel free to email me anytime to arrange a chat!

What I can offer

  • Training toward becoming an independent researcher. My goal is to help you develop the ability to independently identify important research problems, execute rigorous research, and publish consistently at strong international venues.
  • Support for building an academic career beyond publications. Academic careers require much more than publishing papers. Throughout my own career, I have participated in many aspects of the academic ecosystem: attending a Doctoral Consortium at a top-tier conference, conducting a research internship at Meta, serving on international conference organizing committees, serving as an Associate Chair, receiving a highly competitive European postdoctoral fellowship, and writing grant proposals. I will actively help my Ph.D. students gain similar experiences and build the portfolio necessary to compete internationally for postdoctoral and faculty positions after graduation.
  • Support for research careers in industry. For students interested in industrial research, I have an extensive network of researchers at companies such as Google, Meta, and NVIDIA. I have also seriously considered the industrial research career path myself and am familiar with the skills and experiences expected of research scientist candidates. I will do my best to help students build the expertise, research record, and professional network needed to pursue research positions at leading technology companies.

What I expect

I welcome students who are passionate about machine learning, human-computer interaction, and scientific research.

You should have completed fundamental coursework in machine learning and at least one course in reinforcement learning, computer vision, robotics, natural language processing, or computer graphics.

Prior research experience is a strong plus. However, if you have not yet had the opportunity to conduct a complete research project, you are still very welcome to get in touch and discuss potential opportunities.

How to apply

Please contact me directly at yichi@csie.ntu.edu.tw and include:

  • A motivation letter describing the research directions that interest you, your relevant technical skills, and your prior research experience (if any)
  • Your undergraduate transcript
  • Your Master’s transcript, if applicable

If you would like to speak with Ph.D. students whom I have previously worked with or supervised, please email me and I would be happy to provide appropriate contact information.
