This is Hsin-Mu (Michael) Tsai's homepage. I am an assistant professor in the Department of Computer Science and Information Engineering and Graduate Institute of Networking and Multimedia at National Taiwan University. I lead the Mobile and Vehicular Network Laboratory in my department. I am also the Principal-Investigator of the project “Next-Generation Collaborative Vehicle Safety System” in the Intel-NTU Connected Context Computing Center.

Special Issue on Multi-radio, Multi-technology, Multi-system Vehicular Communications

I am co-editing a special issue in Elsevier Computer Communications. The issue is about the use of next-generation vehicular network that make use of multiple heterogeneous entities (radio, technology, system, etc.). Please consider submit there. The call-for-paper can be found here.

MobiSys'15 paper presented

I presented our MobiSys'15 paper “RollingLight: Enabling Line-of-Sight Light-to-Camera Communications” at ACM MobiSys'15 in Florence, Italy (acceptance rate = 13.2%). This is the first full paper with all Taiwan-based authors in the history of MobiSys! [Presentation Video]

IEEE Spectrum article on our V2LC research

My research partner at Intel Labs, Dr. Richard D. Robert, and I were interviewed by IEEE Spectrum for an article about our latest research efforts on vehicular visible light communications (V2LC) in July, and the article just went online on the IEEE spectrum website. CTI TV coverage

CTI TV in Taiwan had a short coverage on the use of our traffic congestion detection algorithm in an iOS app - DrivingCurve. The video is here. They also had a coverage on our VLC scooter taillight prototype here.


I am currently looking for brilliant students (all levels: undergraduate, master, and phd students) who would like to work on interesting research problems and to have hands-on experience on useful experimental research tools such as wireless channel measurement equipments, software defined radios, wireless sensor nodes (similar to embedded systems), and software network simulators, to join my lab. The main research direction of the lab is to understand the general principles of the communication patterns and underlying channels, to engineer towards a feasible communication infrastructure for the future ubiquitous mobile and vehicular networks, and to discover new applications for these networks. There are lots of interesting problems which we can work on. The potential students are encouraged to schedule a meeting with me via e-mail. I can explain these topics in details when we meet.
