Title: Personal Robotics at Intel

Abstract:
Robots are extremely effective in environments like factory floors that are structured for them, and currently ineffective in environments like our homes that are structured for humans. The Personal Robotics project is developing the fundamental building blocks of perception, navigation, manipulation, and interaction that will enable robots to perform useful tasks in environments structured for humans. In this talk, I will outline our research on these building blocks. Our main research focus is on Manipulation Planning: extending randomized planners to constraint manifolds, functional gradient optimization with CHOMP, and leveraging the mechanics of manipulation for planning under uncertainty. Another focus is Perception for Manipulation: we have developed MOPED: an efficient object recognition and pose estimation system for manipulation. We have also recently begun working on Human-Robot Interaction, in particular on the problem of collaborative manipulation. We integrate all of our algorithms on our technology testbed HERB, short for Home Exploring Robot Butler, a bimanual mobile manipulator comprised of two Barrett WAM arms on a Segway base equipped with a suite of image and range sensors.
 
Short-bio:
Dr. Siddhartha Srinivasa is a Senior Research Scientist with Intel Labs Pittsburgh and Adjunct Faculty at the Robotics Institute at Carnegie Mellon University. He founded the Personal Robotics project at Intel Pittsburgh, leads the Mobility and Manipulation Thrust at the Quality of Life NSF ERC, and co-directs the Manipulation Lab at CMU. Dr. Srinivasa's research focus is on developing perception, planning, and learning algorithms that enable robots to accomplish useful manipulation tasks in dynamic and cluttered indoor environments. He founded the IEEE RAS Technical Committee on Mobile Manipulation in 2010 and is an Associate Editor of IEEE ICRA 2010 and 2011. Dr. Srinivasa's work has received numerous accolades including the IEEE/RSJ IROS 2010 Best Paper Finalist, ACM/IEEE HRI 2010 Best Paper Winner, IEEE ICRA 2010 Best Manipulation Paper Finalist, and IEEE ICRA 2009 Best Vision Paper Finalist. Dr. Srinivasa's work has been featured on The Discovery Channel, BBC News, Scientific American, PBS, NSF Science Nation, Popular Science, and the National Geographic.
