Artificial intelligence (AI) is a widely used buzzword these days, but how to make money with AI is still a big ask for many corporations and startups. In this talk, Dr. Shann-Ching Chen will share Compal’s AI landing experience and lessons learned as a giant laptop manufacturer. Projects including Pixsee baby camera, Shennona personal sound amplification product, and pilot efforts in precision health will be discussed. Shann-Ching’s will also provide some thoughts and advice for career development in both academia and industry.
Dr. Shann-Ching Chen received his M.S. degree in Electrical and Computer Engineering and Ph.D. degree in Biomedical Engineering from Carnegie Mellon University in 2002 and 2007, respectively. After finishing his postdoc training at Scripps Research Institute in 2009, he worked at St. Jude Children's Research Hospital, Thermo Fisher Scientific, University of California, San Francisco and Natera, focusing on cancer genomics and translational research. Shann-Ching has authored and co-authored over 25 high-profile research publications, including Nature, Cell, Science, New England Journal of Medicine and Journal of Machine Learning Research. He is now with Compal Electronics as a Senior Scientist, exploring Deep Learning for Precision Medicine and entrepreneurship in the Silicon Valley. Prior to Carnegie Mellon, Shann-Ching earned his B.S degree in Computer Science and Information Engineering from National Taiwan University in 1999.
