The aim of Dr. Shen’s research efforts is to amalgamating deep learning with engineering design optimization as well as explore new directions in general manufacturing/production predictive maintenance and operational optimization. Topology optimization, a branch of design optimization, is a mathematical method to solve a material layout problem constrained for a given design domain, loading, and boundary conditions. Ideally, with adequate problem statements, to formulate and solve the topology design problem using a standard topology optimization process, such as Simplified Isotropic Material with Penalization (SIMP) is possible. However, the conventional optimization approach is in general impractical or computationally unachievable for real world applications due to over thousands of design iterations are often required for just a few design variables. Therefore, there is a need for a different approach that will be able to optimize the initial design topology effectively and rapidly. This talk presents a new topology design procedure to generate optimal structures using an integrated Generative Adversarial Networks and convolutional neural network architecture.
Professor of Mechanical & Aerospace Engineering, The Ohio State University, received his Ph.D. degree in Aerospace Engineering from University of Michigan in 1989. For the past thirty-one years, he has pioneered developments Digital Twin driven on-line structural health management framework and predictive/proactive maintenance schemes for gas turbines, aircrafts, composites, power generation assets, wind turbines, offshore platforms, auto assembly lines, and semiconductor manufacturing processes. His research contributions have been recognized by the research communities and acknowledged by the Industry Outlook Section of Aviation Week & Space Technology. The research communities have also recognized Dr. Shen’s recent research efforts in bridging the deep learning and healthcare. He is a recipient of the Air Force Research Initiation Award, ALCOA Science Foundation Research Award, and The Ohio State University College of Engineering Lumley Research Award.
