Abstract:

 
Magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) is an important tool for clinical diagnosis. In clinical MRI sessions, multiple images with different contrasts are acquired from a patient using a series of conventional MRI sequences. However, it has been challenging to acquire a complete set of high-quality multi-contrast MRI data for many clinical cases, such as for seriously ill patients who cannot tolerate long scan time, and stroke patients who need to be accurately and quickly diagnosed within a very short time window. Moreover, every year millions of patients need to rely on sedation or anesthesia to complete lengthy MRI procedures, posing significant risks for serious adverse effects. In this talk, Dr. Chu will discuss basic MRI principle and current challenging MR scan-efficiency problems. She will also share her research on motion-immune and ultra-fast MRI approaches, enabling high-quality brain and body MRI for challenging patient populations.
 
 
Biography:
 
Dr. Mei-Lan Chu (朱美孏) is an magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) scientist with expertise in pulse sequence design, ultrafast image acquisition methodology, MR physics, signal processing and MR artifact correction. She has developed fast MR acquisition technologies to enable multi-contrast and quantitative MRI for challenging patients (e.g. unsedated children and tremor-dominant Parkinson’s patients). She has also developed innovative approaches to address various type of challenging MRI artifacts, ranging from motion-induced aliasing artifacts in diffusion-weighted imaging, to echo-planar imaging (EPI) distortions and to multi-echo-pathway signal contamination. The current focus of her research is the development of innovative data acquisition and reconstruction approaches to enable high-resolution, artifact-free, multi-contrast and quantitative MRI for challenging patients within a clinically-feasible time period.
 
Dr. Chu is currently an assistant professor of Biomedical Engineering in National Central University, and was awarded the Young Scholar Fellowship from the Ministry of Science and Technology in Taiwan. Dr. Chu obtained her Ph.D. degree in Biomedical Electronics and Bioinformatics, and B.S. degree in Electrical Engineering from National Taiwan University. Before being a faculty member in Taiwan, she was a visiting scholar and a postdoctoral researcher of Brain Imaging and Analysis Center at Duke University.
