Date: 2018-12-28 3:30pm-5:30pm
Location: R102, CSIE
Speaker: Prof. David M. Brooks, Harvard University
Hosted by: Prof. Chia-Ling Yang

Abstract:

Machine learning systems are being deployed across billions of edge devices and in datacenter infrastructure distributed across the planet. This talk seeks to address several questions from a system design perspective. What are the key similarities and differences between machine learning applications at the edge and in the cloud? How do we co-design our systems across the computing stack to ensure success at scale? And how do we even measure success? The talk concludes by identifying several open research problems in this space.

Biography:

David Brooks is the Haley Family Professor of Computer Science in the John A. Paulson School of Engineering and Applied Sciences at Harvard University. He joined Harvard in 2002 after spending one year as a research staff member at IBM's T.J. Watson Research Center. He spent the 2017-18 academic year on sabbatical at Facebook as a visiting research scientist. Brooks received his B.S. in Electrical Engineering at the University of Southern California and M.A. and Ph.D. degrees in Electrical Engineering at Princeton University. Brooks' research interests include computer design at the hardware-software interface, with recent work focused on computing for robotics and machine learning. Professor Brooks is a Fellow of the IEEE and has received several honors and awards including the ACM Maurice Wilkes Award, NSF CAREER award, IBM Faculty Partnership Award, and DARPA Young Faculty Award.
