2018 Kaggle Data Science Bowl featured prediction competition in identifying cell nuclei in divergent images to advance medical discovery. In this 3-months competition, Compal’s team achieved Top 1% performance among more than 3500 teams of researchers over the world. In this talk, Dr. Shann-Ching Chen will share Compal’s strategy and the experience learned from the competition. Furthermore, he will investigate trends and future directions for artificial intelligence in medicine. With Shann-Ching’s unique interdisciplinary experience in computer engineering and biomedicine, he will also provide some thoughts and advice for career development in both academia and industry.
Dr. Shann-Ching Chen received his M.S. degree in Electrical and Computer Engineering and Ph.D. degree in Biomedical Engineering from Carnegie Mellon University in 2002 and 2007, respectively. After finishing his postdoc training at Scripps Research Institute in 2009, he worked at St. Jude Children's Research Hospital, Thermo Fisher Scientific, University of California, San Francisco and Natera, focusing on cancer genomics and translational research. Shann-Ching has authored and co-authored over 25 high-profile research publications, including Nature, Cell, Science, New England Journal of Medicine and Journal of Machine Learning Research. He is now with Compal Electronics as a Senior Scientist, exploring Deep Learning for Precision Medicine and entrepreneurship in the Silicon Valley. Prior to Carnegie Mellon, Shann-Ching earned his B.S degree in Computer Science and Information Engineering from National Taiwan University in 1999.
