Title: Data Mining on Encrypted Data


It is getting more and more common for users/organizations to make use of a third-party cloud system as a storage medium. To protect the confidentiality and privacy of the data, the data is usually stored in its encrypted form. On the other hand, to have a more accurate data mining prediction result, the trend is for different parties (e.g. two different banks) to combine their data for data mining purposes. However, none of these parties would like the others to learn the details of their own data, except the final data mining results. Also, if the data volume is huge, it is not easy for them to exchange or combine the data together. This motivates the study of the problem of privacy-preserving data mining using clouds on encrypted data. If the data is already stored in a cloud system, it would be great if we can also leverage the computational power of the cloud system. In this talk, we will provide an introduction to this research area and may discuss a particular problem in details.


Dr. S. M. Yiu is an Associate Professor of the Department of Computer Science at the University of Hong Kong. Dr. Yiu’s areas of research interest are bioinformatics, cryptography, and computer security. He is currently the deputy executive director of the HKU-BGI BAL (Bioinformatics Algorithms and Core Technology Research Laboratory) and the leader of the Applied Cryptography Research Group of the Center for Information Security and Cryptography. Dr. Yiu published extensively in both areas of bioinformatics and computer security and has given many invited talks in research groups of these two areas in various universities and international conferences. He has been the programme committee members and programme co-chairs of a number of international conferences in these two areas. He also received many awards in both teaching and research from the University of Hong Kong. He was one of the recipients for the Research Output Prize of the University of Hong Kong, twice for the Faculty Best Teacher award from the Faculty of Engineering, and 6 times for the Teaching Excellence Award from the Department of Computer Science of the University of Hong Kong.

Title: Perspectives of GPU Computing in the New Big Data Era

The rise of graphics processing units (GPUs) in the data centers, in self-driving vehicles, and in mobile AR navigation systems is one of the latest technology trends. Compared with the CPU architecture, GPUs bring orders of magnitude more computing power with a significantly smaller hardware and energy footprint. Although current techniques (e.g., CUDA and OpenCL) can automatically parallelize and offload sizable workload onto the GPU, there are still a family of computation patterns that cannot be parallelized or executed efficiently on GPUs. In this talk, we will first discuss the emerging trends in GPU hardware architectures, then introduce a new compiler and runtime platform, called Japonica, which helps in unfettering the power of the GPU with minimal programming effort.  We will show how Japonica accelerated OpenCL code execution on Nvidia/AMD GPUs, and Snapdragon mobile phone.  Our solutions could bring big opportunities to harness the power of GPUs for real-time analytics, deep learning, and artificial intelligence.



Cho-Li Wang is currently a Professor in the Department of Computer Science at The University of Hong Kong. He received his B.S. degree in Computer Science and Information Engineering from National Taiwan University in 1985. He obtained his M.S. and Ph.D. degrees in Computer Engineering from University of Southern California in 1990 and 1995 respectively. Prof. Wang’s research is broadly in the areas of parallel architecture, operating systems, and software systems for Cloud and Big Data computing. He is/was on the editorial boards of scholarly journals, including IEEE Transactions on Computers (2006-2010) and IEEE Transactions on Cloud Computing (2013-2017). He has served as the programme chair for numerous conferences such as IEEE Cluster’03, CCGrid'09, ICPADS’09, Cluster’12, and IC2E’16; and the General Chair for IPDPS’12. He is a member of China’s Supercomputing and Innovation Alliance, and a panel member of Hong Kong Research Grants Council (RGC).
