Thesis Guidelines for Prof. Lyuu's Students
Thesis Guidelines for Prof. Lyuu's Students
-
Name your thesis drafts by your_student_ID-draft_no(3 digits).
For example, if your student ID is r92922099 and this is the 5th version, make
it r92922099_005.doc or r92922099_005.pdf if you use LaTeX.
-
Email your drafts with your NTU (preferred) or
NTUCSIE email account because it uses your student ID as the user name.
That will save me time identifying you and replying to you.
- Read my (Slightly) Better Dissertation Writing in English for Taiwanese
for some helpful tips.
- When you revise your thesis, do not just perform local revisions on the
parts I covered before you return a new version to me.
If you return a revised version quickly with only local changes,
I will likely see similar problems later on.
Instead, you should revise the parts that I have not covered, too.
In particular, read your thesis
from beginning to end a few times to spot problems based on my comments.
Paradoxically, that will actually speed things up.
- I prefer that you indent the paragraphs.
-
For those using Microsoft Word:
- Turn on Word's 工具 -> 追蹤修訂.
- You must turn on 追蹤修訂 all the time so that I can track your revisions.
- Turn on 檢視 -> 標記 if necessary.
- Never click 接受變更 or 拒絕變更. I will do it myself. (Because if you do it, I will lose track of the changes
you did or I asked you to do.)
-
Never remove my comments in balloons. Do reply to my comments so that I know
what you did or what you thought. Insert your comments under mine in the same balloon.
If you agree with my comment, write "done."
-
Do not use carriage returns to format your thesis. Word will do it for you automatically.
-
Each chapter must begin on a new page. Do not use carriage return to do it. Instead, use 插入 -> 分隔設定 to add a new page.
-
Use equation editor to input your math expressions to the extent possible. Do not type your own () and [] because,
if you do, your () and [] will not adjust their heights to accommodate the expressions between them.
Equation editor has buttons for you to insert () and [].
-
Your thesis should start with _001.doc. I will return with
a _002.doc, and so on. In other words, all your versions will be odd-numbered,
and mine will be even-numbered.
- Use justification (flush left and right) for your text.
- Never hard-code your equation numbers and figure numbers. Word can do that for you.
- Use floating boxes to host your figures, tables, and their captions so that they will not be split across pages.
- Here is a sample dissertation. You must take a look.
-
For those using LaTeX:
- To save time, a thesis that does not follow the above guidelines risks being returned promptly.
