From the pages of Wasyu's Encyclopedia Tenchicca-- Tenchi Muyo! in LOVE by Thomas WHAT IS IT ABOUT? The "Class A1" criminal Kain has escaped! The Galaxy Police Headquarters has vanished! Tenchi's body is disappearing! Drawn to earth by Jurai energy, the same energy that helped the Galaxy Police capture him, Kain has traveled through time to Earth in the year 1970 to exact his revenge on the Jurai. His target is Tenchi's mother, a young Achika. Tenchi Muyo In Love was originally released in Japan in 1996. It is the story of Tenchi and the girls' struggle to protect Achika and save Tenchi's future. The gang must travel back in time to 1970 to prevent an attack on Achika, thus preserving the events that lead to Tenchi's creation, i.e., the relationship between Nobuyuki and Achika. This relationship is practically non-existent at the beginning of the movie and is more of a key focus, than the constant tug of war between Aeka and Ryoko for Tenchi's heart. Thus the title of the movie is somewhat misleading. Despite the grave situation at hand, in true Tenchi Muyo spirit the movie does have a lighthearted turn through most of the middle portion. Here many of the girls assume roles at Achika's high school in order to protect her from the threat of an imminent attack. Mihoshi assumes the role of a teacher; Kiyone, a Janitor; and Ryoko and Aeka pose as transfer students in Achika's class. (The only ones with bright colored spiky hair!) Under Washu's advice, Tenchi himself must not let his mother see him for fear of a "Time Paradox." The film culminates with the class field trip to Tokyo Towers. Washu pinpoints Kain's arrival and a battle ensues in which Tenchi, Achika and the young Nobuyuki summon up tremendous courage. Tenchi Muyo In Love provides a great view into regions of the Tenchi Universe previously unexplored. Until the release of this film, Achika was only briefly mentioned throughout the series, due to her death at a young age, while Tenchi was still a child. Now we get to see the carefree schoolgirl who was mother to our hero. We also get to see a very different and shy side of Nobuyuki, rather than the perverted man he is through most of the other Tenchi Anime. There is also a lot of cool mechanical gadgets displayed in the film as Washu's inventions help the whole gang. Director Hiro Negishi stated that this movie was created to further explain why Tenchi returned home at the end of the "Tenchi TV" series instead of staying on Jurai, and to explain the origins of Achika and the Masaki household, which Nobuyuki, as a young student, is drawing in the film.
